Partial Knee Replacement (PKR)

What is Partial Knee Replacement?

Partial Knee Replacement, or Unicompartmental Knee Replacement (UKR) / Microplasty, is a surgical procedure designed for patients with localised knee arthritis. Unlike Total Knee Replacement, PKR replaces only the damaged portion of the knee while preserving healthy cartilage, ligaments, and bone, leading to a more natural knee function.

Who is a Candidate for Partial Knee Replacement?

Patients with the following conditions may benefit from PKR:
  • Medial or lateral compartment osteoarthritis (arthritis limited to one side of the knee)
  • Intact knee ligaments, including the ACL
  • Minimal or no deformity (no severe bow-legged or knock-kneed alignment)
  • Active lifestyle with mild to moderate pain and normal BMI

Benefits of Partial Knee Replacement

  • Smaller incisions with less tissue disruption
  • Faster recovery and rehabilitation compared to TKR
  • More natural knee movement and sensation
  • Reduced blood loss and lower risk of complications

The Partial Knee Replacement Procedure

  1. Preoperative Assessment: MRI scans and X-rays confirm the extent of damage.
  2. Anaesthesia & Incision: A small incision is made over the affected knee compartment.
  3. Cartilage & Bone Removal: Only the damaged portion of the knee is replaced.
  4. Implant Placement: A metal alloy and plastic prosthesis is positioned to restore joint function.
  5. Closure & Recovery: The incision is closed, and the patient begins early mobilization.

Recovery Timeline

  • Day 1-3: Early walking with assistance, pain management
  • Week 1-4: Progressive weight-bearing, strengthening exercises
  • Month 1-3: Return to light activities, full knee function restored
  • Month 3-6: Return to sports and high-impact activities
