Hemi Replacement

What is Hemiarthroplasty?

Hemiarthroplasty is a surgical procedure in which only one part of the hip joint—the femoral head—is replaced with a prosthetic implant while preserving the patient’s natural acetabulum (hip socket). This procedure is commonly performed for elderly patients with hip fractures.

Indications for Hemiarthroplasty

  • Femoral neck fractures (especially in elderly or osteoporotic patients)
  • Avascular necrosis of the femoral head
  • Pathological fractures due to tumours
  • Non-reconstructable femoral head damage

Benefits of Hemiarthroplasty

  • Reduced surgical time compared to total hip replacement
  • Lower risk of hip dislocation
  • Quicker post-operative recovery
  • Suitable for elderly or frail patients who may not tolerate total hip replacement

Surgical Procedure

  1. Patient Evaluation – A thorough assessment including imaging studies to confirm the need for hemiarthroplasty.
  2. Anaesthesia – Spinal or general anaesthesia is administered.
  3. Implantation of the Prosthesis – The damaged femoral head is removed and replaced with a metal implant.
  4. Post-Operative Rehabilitation – Physiotherapy begins early to prevent complications and promote mobility.

Types of Hemiarthroplasty

  • Unipolar Hemiarthroplasty – A single-piece femoral head prosthesis is used.
  • Bipolar Hemiarthroplasty – Features a two-piece design to reduce wear and tear on the natural acetabulum, improving longevity.
